Next.js Basics for Drupal developers
2025-03-12 , Pischa

This talk introduces Next.js concepts, pros, and cons, through a Drupal developer’s lens, demonstrating how the two platforms complement each other for building modern web experiences.

Next.js has become the leading JavaScript frontend framework and the default full-stack choice for React developers. As a long-time PHP developer and Drupal enthusiast, I embraced modern JS frameworks, particularly Next.js, a few years ago. While I share some of the criticism aimed at “modern JavaScript,” I also recognize the critiques of “old-fashioned PHP” and “modern Drupal.”

That said, I believe the real value comes from learning across ecosystems and frameworks.

In this talk, I’ll provide an overview of Next.js, its concepts, and its pros and cons from a Drupal developer’s perspective. I’ll demonstrate how Next.js and Drupal complement each other, forming a powerful foundation for modern web experiences.

The session will include engaging coding examples, showcasing the developer experience, key concepts, and features of Next.js. I’ll also walk through building and deploying a full Next.js app with a headless Drupal backend.
